Safety Use Cases

Use Case

Description

Type

Emergency Electronic Brake Lights Warning

This use case presents alerts to the driver of hard braking in the traffic stream ahead. By providing these alerts in advance, the driver has additional time to look for and assess situations developing ahead. (Infographic)

V2V Use Case

Forward Collision Warning

This use case presents alerts to the driver to help avoid or mitigate the severity of crashes into the rear end of other vehicles on the road. Forward collision warning responds to a direct and imminent threat ahead of the host vehicle. (Infographic)

V2V Use Case

Blind Spot Warning / Lane Change Warning

This use case presents alerts to the driver indicating the presence of same-direction traffic in an adjacent lane (Blind Spot Warning), or alerts given to the driver during vehicle lane changes (Lane Change Warning) to help the driver avoid crashes associated with potentially unsafe lane changes. (Infographic)

V2V Use Case

Intersection Movement Assist

This use case presents alerts to the driver when it is not safe to enter an intersection—for example, when something is blocking the driver’s view of opposing or crossing traffic. This use case can be implemented as either a V2I (near-term use case) or V2V application. (Infographic)

V2V or V2I Use Case

Left Turn Assist Warning

This use case presents alerts to the driver as they attempt an unprotected left turn across traffic, to help them avoid crashes with opposite direction traffic. This use case can be implemented as either a V2I (near-term use case) or V2V application. (Infographic)

V2V or V2I Use Case

Red Light Violation Warning

This use case includes the broadcast of signal phase and timing (SPaT) and MAP messages that are received by in-vehicle devices that allow alerts to be presented to the driver of impeding red light violations. (Infographic)

V2I Use Case

Emergency Vehicle Preemption

This use case preempts the traffic signal timing at a signalized intersection to allow the movement of emergency vehicles through the intersection.

V2I Use Case

Emergency Vehicle Alert

This use case presents alerts to the driver when an emergency vehicle (i.e., police, ambulance, fire truck, or another emergency vehicle) are approaching their vehicle.

V2V or V2I Use Case

Distress Notification (Mayday Alert)

This use case allows vehicles to communicate a distress status back to a Center when the vehicle’s sensors detect an event that might require assistance from others (e.g., air bag deployed, vehicle disabled) or the vehicle’s driver manually initiates a distress status.

V2I Use Case

Curve Speed Warning

This use case presents alerts to the driver when a vehicle is approaching a curve at a speed that may be too high for safe travel through that curve. (Infographic)

V2I Use Case

Reduced Speed Warning

This use case presents alerts to the driver to reduce the speed of their vehicle prior to approaching a segment of road with a reduced speed limit – including but not limited to a school zone, work zone, reduced speed limit, or variable speed limit.

V2I Use Case

Pedestrian in Signalized Crosswalk Warning

This use case presents alerts to the driver when pedestrians, within the crosswalk of a signalized intersection, are in the intended path of the vehicle. The pedestrian’s presence in the crosswalk is determined using lidar or other detection technology. (Infographic)

V2I Use Case

Wrong Way Entry Warning

This use case presents alerts to the driver if their vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction. This use case may also provide alerts to other drivers that there is a wrong way driver on the road.

V2I Use Case

Railroad Crossing Warning

This use case presents alerts to the driver as the vehicle approaches an active railroad crossing. (Infographic)

V2I Use Case

Oversize Vehicle Warning

  • Overheight Warning
  • Overweight Warning

This use case presents alerts to the driver when an oversize vehicle (overheight or overweight vehicle) approaches a segment of road with height or weight restrictions.
