About the ITS PCB Program

The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Professional Capacity Building (PCB) Program is the U.S. Department of Transportation’s primary mechanism for educating today’s and tomorrow’s transportation workforce about current and future intelligent transportation technology. The program assists transportation professionals, educators, and students in developing their knowledge, skills, and abilities to build technical proficiency while furthering their career paths. Crowdsourcing for Operations Course as a Webinar Series

This webinar series, presented by the FHWA Every Day Counts (EDC) Innovation and ITS JPO PCB Program, introduces transportation professionals to the innovative use of crowdsourced data in improving Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO). Across five webinars, participants will explore practical applications in areas such as Traffic Incident Management, Road Weather, Work Zone Management, and more, with insights from State and local practitioners. Ideal for professionals at all levels, the series provides foundational knowledge and peer-to-peer experiences to enhance transportation operations.

New Foundational ITS Trainings Page - Free Resources for Transportation Professionals

The ITS PCB Program now offers free foundational trainings on ITS tailored for transportation professionals at all levels. Whether you're a student, intern, early career professional, or simply interested in how technology can address today’s transportation challenges, these resources provide essential knowledge to prepare you for a career in ITS. Topics include ITS Basics, ITS and Safety, Transportation Systems Management & Operations, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X), Systems Engineering, and ITS Architecture and Standards.

Foundational V2X Trainings

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) is the use of wireless communications technologies to enable vehicles to communicate with each other, other road users such as pedestrians and bicyclists, and infrastructure. These technologies have the potential to make significant impacts improving safety, enhancing mobility, and reducing transportation’s environmental impact. This foundational-level course provides participants with a basic understanding of V2X concepts. Participants are introduced to the key components that enable a V2X ecosystem, the potential benefits of the technology, and example use cases and the messages and standards supporting them while ensuring safety and privacy. This 4-hour introductory course is currently be offered in collaboration with ITS America to ITS State Chapters – as well as others – across the United States.
