Slide 1: Community College ITS Workshop

Randy Johnson, P.E., PTOE, ACTAR
Kansas City Scout

[This slide contains a background image of the interior of an autonomous vehicle that is without driver controls, including a steering wheel, a gas pedal, and a brake pedal.]

Slide 2: The Future is Now

[This slide contains a photo of a woman in the driver’s seat of a Tesla car, on a crowded highway, not touching the steering wheel, and with a digital roadmap to the right of the steering wheel.]

Slide 3: Road to Tomorrow

Prepare MoDOT to integrate 21st century technologies into our transportation system and services

[This slide contains a photo of a city with an overlay of lines to indicate the flow of information between different parts of the city.]

Slide 4: Solar Roadways

  • Produce clean renewable energy for homes, businesses and electric cars on the roadway
  • Heating elements to prevent snow and ice accumulation
  • Panels have microprocessors that allows the panels to communicate with each other, a central control station, and vehicles
  • LED lights to create lines and signage without paint

[This slide contains a photo-like image of a solar roadway in a rural, desert setting.]

Slide 5: “Autonomous” True s

  • Purpose - To remove driver from first warning vehicle in mobile highway operations
  • Leader-follower concept with wireless communications

[This slide contains a photo of two trucks on a test lot. The photo is marked with concentric lines between the two vehicles to indicate wireless communication from the second truck to the first truck.]

Slide 6: Rural Queue Warning System

  • Utilizes MoDOT’s real-time speed probe data
  • Post automatic messages on rural DMS
  • Focused on alerting traffic as soon as possible and reduce secondary accidents

[This slide contains a photo of a dynamic message sign displaying the words “Stopped Traffic | Past Exit 119 | 10-20 Min Delay.”]

Slide 7: Hyperloop One “Global Challenge”

  • Kansas City - Saint Louis route is a 240-mile mixed system (passengers + cargo) that would run parallel to 1-70. About a 25 minute commute
  • Benefit from access to the 2nd and 3rd largest rail hubs in the nation

[This slide contains a photo-like image of a hyperloop expanse, constructed over a desert.]

Slide 8: Smart City - Kansas City

[This slide contains an infographic of a smart city, with buildings connected to icons representing different elements of a smart city, such as Smart Mobility, Smart Home, Smart Society, Smart Care, Smart Building, Big Data, Smart Energy, IOT, Smart Retail, Smart Working, End User Driven Innovation, and Smart Product Management.]

Slide 9: The Future is Now

[This slide contains the same image as that in Slide 2.]

Slide 10: What does ITS really mean?

  • I = Innovative
  • T = Technical
  • S = Synergy

Slide 11: Technical Needs

  • Network/Communications
    • Basic understanding of components and how it all fits together (switches, routers, IP addresses, fiber optics, dedicated short range communications, etc.)
  • Traffic Technician
    • Basic understanding of traffic operations such as traffic signal/ramp meter control and capacity analysis. Enjoys data analysis
  • Project Management/Construction Management
    • Oversee project design and construction of ITS infrastructure

Slide 12: Innovation

  • Creativity and Imagination
  • “We cannot solve a problem by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
    - Albert Einstein
  • “Never before in history has innovation offered promise of so much to so many in so short a time.”
    - Bill Gates
  • “The best way to predict the future is to create it.

[This slide contains screenshots of one title and three quotes that are reproduced in the list above.]

Slide 13: (No title)

[This slide contains two images: (1) a word cloud centered around the word Synergy in the largest font, including the words Working Together, Cooperation, Combination, Interact, Harmony, Connection, Agents, etc., and (2) a photo of five people crowded around a computer screen.]

Slide 14: The Future is Now

[This slide contains the same image as that in Slides 2 and 9.]

Slide 15: Looking Ahead

  • Internships and Guest Speakers - gain current knowledge
  • Advantages of Community Colleges
    • More technical training
    • Smaller investment to determine if like specific field
    • Organizations help employees pay for continuing education
