Talking Technology and Transportation (T3) Webinars

T3 Webinars are designed to help agencies feel confident about deploying and operating ITS technologies as a means to address challenges in their transportation systems. These free, 90-minute, interactive online meetings offer knowledge sharing on topics related to ITS planning, design, procurement, deployment, and operations. The goal of the T3 Webinar Program is to increase the planning and technical capabilities of the ITS workforce, leading to a greater number of integrated, strategic, and effectively-deployed ITS systems.

In addition to the standard 90-minute T3 webinar, the PCB Program is now offering T3 Lites which feature one presenter on a specific ITS-related topic for 30 minutes followed by a question and answer period.

Talking Technology and Transportation in Education (T3e) Webinars

The T3e webinars focus on academic research and provide universities and institutions an opportunity to showcase specific initiatives and study areas. This unique webinar series provides professors and students an opportunity to share research findings, students to hone their presentation skills, and industry practitioners and policy-makers to learn about academic findings.

T3 Webinar Basics

  • A T3 Webinar is normally 90 minutes with presentations delivered in the first 60 minutes followed by 30 minutes for questions and answers from the audience.
  • Accessible 24/7, past events are stored in the T3 Webinar Archive and include an audio/video playback of the webinar. Transcripts from the webinar along with presentations used in the webinar are posted in the archive approximately three weeks after the webinar.
  • The ITS PCB Program does not offer Professional Development Hours (PDHs); however, your completion of a training module may qualify as a PDH-eligible activity with your licensing agency. The steps to request a confirmation that you attended the webinar are explained in the webinar.

T3e Webinar Basics

  • A T3e webinar runs 60 minutes and is focused on a specific intelligent transportation system (ITS) topic, theme, or subject area. The first 30-45 minutes are devoted to presentations on relevant research occurring in academic settings. The remaining 15-30 minutes are set aside for an interactive question and answer discussion among T3e presenters and audience members.

T3e Webinars are sponsored by the ITS Professional Capacity Building Program (ITS PCB). The ITS PCB Program is a program within the US Department of Transportation's (DOT) ITS Joint Program Office (ITS JPO). The ITS PCB Program Manager oversees the T3e Webinar initiative, which is administered by staff at the DOT’s Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

There are a variety of T3e presenters; usually a professor serves as host. The presentation must include university students, and can also incorporate researchers, and other staff members, or professors. There may be as little as two and as many as five presenters.

The T3e Webinar is developed by the professor and presenters, who determine the topic(s) and learning objectives. In contrast to other T3’s, they are not hosted by a federal DOT staff member, but a professor may serve as host to the webinar with their students. All T3e’s are produced by the Volpe Center T3 team. Volpe staff supports the host during the webinar.

The time commitment to participate in a T3e Webinar is generally 4-6 hours over the course of approximately 6 weeks leading up to and through the completion of the webinar. In the bulleted list below, the items in bold represent those activities that vary the greatest in terms of time commitment.

  • One 15-minute planning meeting by phone to discuss organization and logistics of the presentation.
  • One 60-minute webinar dry-run to rehearse the webinar, iron out kinks, and to identify final changes to presentations (the T3 team will schedule 1 hour, but this usually takes less time).
  • One 60-minute T3e Webinar
  • Approximately one hour to read/respond to emails from the T3 webinar team over the course of planning and delivering the webinar
  • Approximately 1-2 hours to develop your presentation (it is assumed that the majority of student presentation has been developed for other purposes and will only need slight modifications)

The estimated time commitment is typically spread over a 6 week delivery schedule. Some webinars are placed on longer delivery schedules, depending on the availability of the webinar presenters. The Volpe Center administers the T3e Webinar initiative, coordinating the webinar planning activities, managing webinar marketing and registration, providing technical assistance for using the webinar platform, and recording the webinar for later viewing in the T3e Webinar Archive.
