Open Letter from Managing Director John Augustine about the 2010 ITS Deployment Tracking Survey

Dear ITS Colleagues:

I am writing to tell you about the 2010 Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Deployment Tracking Survey that is launching this month.  This is the 12th year of our national data gathering effort, and this survey will reach over 2,200 public sector agencies. The ITS Deployment Tracking survey is unique in that it offers the USDOT ITS program with insights on how ITS deployment is progressing to serve the needs of America’s travelers.

The data gathered through this survey will be used by the Intelligent Transportation Systems, Joint Program Office (ITS-JPO) in managing the ITS program and as a source of deployment data for a variety of users, including state and local transportation agencies. If you are a representative of a public sector agency, receiving your response is very important to the data gathering process.  A wide audience of decision makers, lawmakers, planners, designers, engineers, and academics will use the data gathered to further ITS application and device development.

In 2007, the last year of the survey, we achieved an 89% response rate from all agencies we surveyed and we are working very hard to ensure a high response rate again this year. The 2010 ITS Deployment Tracking Survey is designed to measure the quantity of applications and technology deployment; and, to measure the capability of agencies to adopt new technologies into their state-of-the-practice.

The survey focuses on core areas of service that are supported by ITS:

  • Freeway Management
  • Arterial Management
  • Public Safety
  • Transit Management
  • Transportation Management Centers

We also think that you will find the responses we receive from other agencies useful to you.  Results from our previous surveys can be found at: Survey results from our 2010 ITS Deployment Tracking Survey will become available later this year.
