ITS JPO Welcomes Wolfgang Hoefs as International Research Fellow

The Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS JPO) announced that Wolfgang Hoefs has joined the staff in the temporary position of International Research Fellow.

Wolfgang is with the ITS JPO while on leave from his permanent position as Head of Sector for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for low-carbon mobility at the European Commission in Brussels.

Wolfgang's unit, located in the Directorate General for Information Society and Media, is responsible for a $65 million annual funding budget for research in ITS for safety and sustainability. The 2009 Implementing Arrangement between the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration and the European Commission on ICT includes the opportunity to exchange personnel between the two partners. Wolfgang has come to Washington to learn more about the JPO's programs and their implementation and management.

Before Wolfgang joined the Commission in 2001, he was responsible for the interoperability and coordination of the European-wide IT services in land transport at Schenker, a major global logistics service provider based in Germany, after a merger with second-in-class BTL group, based in Sweden. In the 1990s, he worked as General Manager for two IT service providers, supplying solutions to transport and logistics industries.

Wolfgang studied at Dortmund Technical University, Germany, and Birkbeck College in London, UK, majoring in computer science and business administration. He holds a Diplom-Informatiker degree (M.Sc.) from Dortmund Technical University, Germany. He is member of the IEEE and the GI (Gesellschaft für Informatik), the German computer professionals' association. His personal activities include participating as a member of the board in the Alumni Association of his faculty at Dortmund Technical University and (depending on the season) skiing, biking, and sailing.

Wolfgang will be with the ITS JPO through March 2012
