Current Research
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s ITS research focuses on several high-priority areas including Emerging and Enabling Technologies, Data Access and Exchanges, ITS Cybersecurity Research, Automation, ITS4US, and Accelerating ITS Deployment. The ITS Strategic Plan includes in-depth discussion of the ITS Program’s strategic goals, these research areas, and four technology transfer programs.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Hosts Webinar on Data Exchanges to Enable Automated Vehicle Integration
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS JPO) is hosting a webinar on data exchanges to enable automation vehicle integration. Register here.
Background
Access to data is a critical enabler for the safe, efficient, and accessible integration of automated vehicles (AVs) into the transportation system. A lack of access to data could impede actions to accommodate AVs and delay their introduction. On October 4, 2018, the USDOT published Preparing for the Future of Transportation: Automated Vehicles 3.0 (AV 3.0), which talks about the USDOT’s Guiding Principles on Data for Automated Vehicle Safety, available at www.transportation.gov/av/data, and related activities supporting voluntary data exchanges. In this webinar, you will learn about these principles, the emerging framework of data exchange priorities for AV integration, and early efforts to enable exchange of high-priority work zone data.

The target audience for this webinar includes deployers of AVs and supporting technologies, ITS Program Managers at the state and local level, other agencies contemplating automated vehicle deployments, transportation agency CIOs, and anyone interested in improving transportation data exchanges for accelerated safe deployment of AVs.
Learning objectives from this webinar will include:
- Raise awareness of the USDOT AV Data Principles and Framework to help identify and advance data exchange priorities.
- Identify lessons from the Work Zone Data Exchange project in order to increase voluntary data exchange to support AV integration.
