Current Research
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s ITS research focuses on several high-priority areas including Emerging and Enabling Technologies, Data Access and Exchanges, ITS Cybersecurity Research, Automation, ITS4US, and Accelerating ITS Deployment. The ITS Strategic Plan includes in-depth discussion of the ITS Program’s strategic goals, these research areas, and four technology transfer programs.

Connected Vehicle Policy and Institutional Issues
Connected Vehicle Policy and Institutional Issues encompass research and analysis into critical policy and institutional issues that may limit or challenge successful deployment of connected vehicle technologies. The research supports the development and comparison of effective policy options; the analysis results in structured recommendations for policy and decision makers.
The vision for the Connected Vehicle Policy research is one of a collaborative effort among the Department, key industry stakeholders, vehicle manufacturers, state and local governments, representative associations, citizens, and others. After consultation with and with input from all stakeholders, the Department will structure and conduct a research agenda that weighs the benefits and risks and results in strong policy foundation for the successful deployment of connected vehicle technologies and applications.
