About Mobility on Demand
The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) uses the term Mobility on Demand (MOD) to represent its vision for future mobility. MOD envisions a safe, reliable and carefree mobility ecosystem that supports complete trips for all, both personalized mobility and goods delivery. USDOT achieves this vision by leveraging innovative technologies and facilitating public private partnerships to allow for a user-centric approach that improves mobility options for all travelers, and delivery of goods and services.
About the Mobility on Demand Research Program
The Mobility on Demand (MOD) Research Program is a joint U.S. DOT initiative, co-led by the ITS JPO and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The MOD Research Program supports state and local public agencies as they navigate the dynamic, evolving landscape of personal mobility and integrated multimodal transportation network.
The MOD Research Program is an innovative, user-focused research initiative with a transformative approach to travel, leveraging emerging mobility services, integrated transportation networks and operations, real-time data, connected travelers, and existing transit services and infrastructure.
In collaboration with stakeholders, the program will investigate opportunities where the individual traveler can experience several high-quality mobility choices to complete trips and improve their access to destinations. MOD leverages advances in technology and operations to create an environment where all travelers have safe mobility options ensuring reliable, informed, and efficient travel in a multimodal network that prioritizes individual, on-demand mobility within the context of a complete transportation network.
The MOD Operational Concept Report
This operational concept report provides an overview of the Mobility on Demand (MOD) concept and its evolution, description of the MOD ecosystem in a supply and demand framework, and its stakeholders and enablers. Leveraging the MOD ecosystem framework, this report reviews the key enablers of the system including business models and partnerships, land use and different urbanization scenarios, social equity and environmental justice, policies and standards, and enabling technologies. This review is mostly focused on the more recent forms of MOD (e.g., shared mobility). The MOD Operational Concept Report is available on the National Transportation Library.
