The U.S. Department of Transportation’s ITS research focuses on several high-priority areas including Emerging and Enabling Technologies, Data Access and Exchanges, ITS Cybersecurity Research, Automation, ITS4US, and Accelerating ITS Deployment. The ITS Strategic Plan includes in-depth discussion of the ITS Program’s strategic goals, these research areas, and four technology transfer programs.

Transit Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) Research

Research Plan

Transit V2I research is an element of the Track 2 research conducted as part of the V2I program. It focuses on the needs and opportunities that are specific to transit. Based on an analysis of transit bus crash statistics and stakeholder input to explore Connected Vehicle safety applications that can address transit's critical safety needs, a transit-specific V2I application - Pedestrian in Signalized Crosswalk Warning (PCW) - was developed, tested, modified, and deployed in the Safety Pilot Model Deployment. Curve Speed Warning (CSW) was also applied to transit. Additional transit crash data analyses and Connected Vehicle studies have taken place to identify future potential V2V and V2I applications development for transit.
