V2X Accelerator

In Fall 2024, the USDOT awarded cooperative agreements collectively worth $60 million to sites in Arizona, Texas, and Utah to deploy, operate, and showcase integrated, advanced interoperable V2X deployments over two phases.

Deployment Phases

Phase 1

Finalize Design, Build and Test

Up to 18 months

Design, build, and test system to meet the required specifications.
Demonstrate intersite interoperability among wirelessly connected devices within each site.
Phase 2

Operate and Evaluate

Minimum of 12 months

Demonstrate joint intersite interoperability among wirelessly connected devices across the sites.
Evaluate system operational performance and deployment impacts and benefits.
Document reference implementation.
Post-Deployment

Operate and Maintain

Minimum of five years

Sustain operations for a minimum period of five years after the program is completed with no supplementary federal funds.
Maricopa County DOT

Maricopa County DOT

The Maricopa County DOT is leading a largescale deployment to connect 750 physical roadside units and virtual roadside units that utilize a mobile edge computing (MEC) network to an estimated 400 vehicle onboard units targeting transit, emergency and freight fleets. The project will deploy Emergency Vehicle Preemption, Vulnerable Road User detection, Transit Signal Priority, and Freight Signal Priority applications in the Cities of Phoenix, Tolleson, Avondale and unincorporated Maricopa County, as well as along ADOT's US 60.

Texas A&M Transportation Institute

Texas A&M Transportation Institute

Texas A&M Transportation Institute will leverage nearly 1000 existing V2X-enabled signalized intersections in Houston, Missouri City and Fort Bend County and will install dozens more in Houston and City of Station, including areas near the Texas A&M University (TAMU) campus and major corridors connecting these two metropolitan areas. The project will equip local vehicles with V2X technology to support vulnerable road users (VRU) situated at signalized intersections, emergency responders navigating through varying traffic scenarios, transit operators seeking efficient routes, workers operating within construction zones, and everyday motorists.

Utah DOT

Utah DOT

The Utah DOT is leading a deployment that encompasses three states – Utah, Colorado and Wyoming – each representing a broad variety of population densities, demographics, jurisdictions, topography, and transportation facilities. Approximately 750 roadside units will be installed at signalized intersections and along corridors with 215 vehicles will be equipped with onboard units to address critical needs including intersection priority and preemption, weather impact, curve speed warning, traveler information and vulnerable road user and other safety alert technologies.
