Current Research
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s ITS research focuses on several high-priority areas including Emerging and Enabling Technologies, Data Access and Exchanges, ITS Cybersecurity Research, Automation, ITS4US, and Accelerating ITS Deployment. The ITS Strategic Plan includes in-depth discussion of the ITS Program’s strategic goals, these research areas, and four technology transfer programs.

Mobility Services for All Americans (MSAA)
DOT/HHS Coordination Operational Tests
This program consists of 11 operational tests that demonstrate coordination of human services transportation in rural areas among transit operators and HHS agencies using integrated ITS transit technologies and innovative practices. A total of $2.7 million of ITS Joint Program Office (JPO) fund has been awarded to the 11 grant recipients over a three-year period (FY01 – FY03). The 11 operational tests (sites) are:
- Client Referral, Ridership, and Financial Tracking (CRRAFT) System – New Mexico (FY01)
- Northland Healthcare Alliance – North Dakota (FY01)
- Northern Shenandoah Valley Mobility Program – Virginia (FY02)
- JAUNT – Charlottesville, Virginia (FY01/02)
- LYNX and Polk County – Orlando, Florida (FY01)
- Maryland Upper Shore Transit (MUST) – Maryland (FY01/02)
- Cape Ann – Massachusetts (FY02)
- Austin – Texas (FY03)
- Eastern North Carolina – North Carolina (FY02/03)
- Cape Code – Massachusetts (FY03)
- Modoc County – California (FY03)
